Subtitle: Wild, wild west
The homeowners we’re house sitting for told us there are a couple of bears who stop by, usually before 7 a.m. For the past several mornings Jim has gotten up between 5:30 – 6 a.m., brewed his coffee, and sat at the kitchen table like he’s on Santa watch – camera ready to capture the grizzly beast.
And of course, nothing showed up.
Last night Jim headed to Chicago for a couple days (and 90+degrees) and I told him, “now you know a bear is going to show up while you’re gone”.
I should have said, “Now you know I’m going to win the lottery while you’re gone”, because my words came true! But not at 6 a.m. – I wasn’t that eager to see the bear.
I’ve set up my “office” in the family room – it has a nice big window that looks out on the line of bird feeders and the back yard (which is basically a mountain). Throughout the day I take a break from looking at the computer and look out at all the unusual birds. I had my lunch on the back deck, soaked up some vitamin D and was debating whether I should water the garden or go for a walk (on the road up the mountain). I decided I should hold off on both and get back to work.
Less than five minutes later I’m sitting at my “desk”, when I looked out the window and lo and behold a bear (at 2 p.m.!!!) comes wobbling down the mountain. Holy crap! I ran for the camera and got just a couple of shots before I scared him off by opening the window. Wow, that’s some Coal Creek Canyon excitement.

So I’m sitting back at my desk about 8 p.m. writing this up. I took a break and walked past one of the cats with his nose pressed up against the window, looking intently up the mountain. Uh-oh, I know that look. I glanced up and of course didn’t see anything. By the time I sat back down at my computer the bear was in the back yard, digging up seeds that had fallen from the bird feeder. Holy crap x 2!
